4Effective but very... bleachy.
By Uhnghrid
Well this does work very well to remove haircolour. However, it also lightens natural hair, even though it indicates it won't on the box. So be careful! If roots have grown out at all, this would not be suitable for home use, as you have to be VERY careful not to get it on the roots. By the time this has been on the hair long enough to remove the dye from the dyed part of the hair, the roots will be VERY bleached, so if this touches the roots at all you'll have a line of blonde/white hair where it hits the roots. (Yes, this happened to me when I used it expecting it wouldn't bleach like it said on the box... What a pain that was!)To remove haircolour without lightening, try another colour remover like Colorfix (by One n' Only), or Color Oops. These products only remove dye and don't bleach, so they actually have the potential to get you back to your virgin haircolour (dark permanent dyes often don't lighten hair, so your real haircolour is still there under the dye). If you use Colorzap to try to get your original haircolour back, you'll have to dye the hair after removing colour, when with another product only one step (removal) might have been required. You can also use these other products easily if you have roots, as they won't bleach the natural hair.I'd only recommend using Colorzap at home if products that only remove colour without bleaching don't work well enough (this one is very powerful and will almost certainly do the job!), or if you know you want a significantly lighter haircolour, and your roots have not grown out. Also of note: This stuff does NOT spread well through the hair. I needed two boxes for my past-the-shoulders hair. With Color Oops, one box was enough. And Colorfix, which foams a bit when mixed and spreads very well, actually had enough in one box for three applications.

5Surprisingly Gentle
By Brandi R. Ledesma
I had dyed my hair black with L'oreal Feria color. It was suppose to be a natural black, but ended up JET BLACK. I hated it. After tons of "hair color remover product" internet research, I finally took the Colorzap plunge. It's definitely a mild bleach product -- it smelled, looked, and acted like a bleach, but didn't do the damage that pure salon bleach tends to do. I used to bleach my hair at home years ago using just a bleach packet and developer (which, although they don't say it, seems to be exactly what this is), and it dried my hair out quite a bit more than Colorzap. I would highly recommend having a friend do the actual application, as you are suppose to apply it tip to root (opposite regular hair color) and it starts acting quickly so you need to get it on there, fast and evenly. I left it on for about an hour and it was a orange/red/blonde color. I put a semi-permenant medium brown dye over it (Clairol's Natural Instincts) and it took well but a little of the reddish color shows through. My hair was "virgin" before the black dye, so if you have already damaged your hair quite a bit I can't vouch for this product being gentle. If you're going to use this, make sure you condition the hell out of it afterwards and continue to do so. I recommend getting some sort of deep conditioner (I use Aussie's 3 Minute Miracle, among other things) and use it every other day or so, along with a shampoo + conditioner for dry/damaged hair.Overall, it did exactly what I wanted it to with minimal damage. If you can commit to taking good care of your hair afterwards, I say go for it.

1It works, but not well enough.
By A. Landers
I've experimented with different shades through the years, so I've tried various hair color removal products in order for my next shade to go evenly. (I also find that red likes to stick to my porous ends forever, despite the fact that its a fast fading color!)This is one of the worst ones yet. First of all, I doubt this stuff is very gentle. I was wearing an old hair raggy dye shirt and it bleached it so bad it ate through the shirt, creating several huge holes. My goodness, I never thought something could completely ruin my old hair dying shirt. I've never had anything 'gentle' do that before! It's also liquid-y like water, making the application process real messy. The worst part is it's very difficult to apply evenly, because once you rub it around your hair clumps to it...it's almost a glue-ish texture. The only way I could get it to go on evenly was to comb it through, which I did very little of, since it was literally tearing up my hair. Instead I tried to saturate it as much as I could while rubbing it through. It really started to burn after 15 minutes, so I couldn't wait any longer than that. The results were completely uneven. I found it left some red parts almost untouched (it turned it into a pinkish color) while some other areas were bleached yellow/orange. What I wanted was the yellow/orange all the way through. I had applied it to the end areas first and let that sit for 5-7 minutes before doing the rest of my hair. Even then, I still found the root area to be almost blonde. So be careful for you will see 'hot roots' from this stuff quite easily since your scalp area is naturally warmer. So my entire head was real patchy.I've applied my new hair color, and thanks to the bad results with this product, I decided to go with a slightly darker color than I had originally intended. Now it looks almost completely even, but you can still see some of the red dye at the tips. This stuff is too damaging to use again. Next time I'll pick up Ion hair color removal. It is gentler to my hair and is much easier to distribute evenly (plus it doesn't bleach at all!)The box does lie...it does NOT simply remove the box color, leaving you with the pre-lightened strands it had created. It will lighten it even more than that, IF you can get it all the way through your hair. This stuff burned my skin as soon as it touched it, and yeah, my poor old shirt has finally made it into the trash...
